When compared with books covering the same material, The Primes holds up fairly well. It covers how individuals and groups approach problems and change from a conceptual point of view. The pictures help to conceptualize the concepts in the book. I can honestly say, I’ve thought about several of the ideas presented in the book while on the job. Also, the book is attractive.Like other reviewers have noted, the main negative point of the book is the lack of practical/realistic examples. Fortunately, I had the author as an instructor in grad school and over the course of a semester he provided us with countless examples of how the concepts in the book can, and have been applied in business (and life). If you have the chance, see the author speak in public.

I had the pleasure of taking a graduate course with the author of "The Primes How Any Group Can Solve Any Problem" which means I read the book several times, cover to cover. The book is easy to read and the pictures provide good visuals for understanding the content. Explanations of the discovery or creation of each prime provide great examples of the meaning and implementation. Not only do the primes teach about problem-solving and leadership but many of them also caused me to look inward and evaluate my own behavior and state of being.
I will admit it was helpful to have the creator available for consultation and explanation but even so it is a great book. As a college student, I chose to keep this book rather than sell it back...which should say a lot for the book.

I first heard of The Primes from someone who told me that it was interesting, but too simplistic for anyone in "real" business. It was because of that attitude that I bought the book--any time someone takes a haughty, "I'm smarter" attitude, I feel drawn to whatever was being put down by the haughtiness.
I'm so glad I read it. Simple, yes--simplistic, no. And in business of any type and size, simple is good. Especially with teams and their dynamics, which often are anything but simple.
Integrity, Culture, Chase-Lose, and Gossip were my favorites this time through, but I can see how, as I grow, what I feel most drawn to will change. I look forward to having the book nearby for years to come!
The kind of book that makes you nod your head the whole time while also providing a useful vocabulary for making decisions and changes in your organization.
I thought the book was OK, but hardly unique. If you haven't aleady read books on this subject, go for it. If you have, it's not going blow your mind.
Anyone in a leadership position -- or who aspires to -- should read this book. The chapters are short. It's a quick and easy read. I go back to it often and have given several to people who work with me.
This is a quick read, but you'll probably want to read it again to absorb the usefulness of the concepts and tools here. "The Primes" provides practical uses instead of abstract advice. Put these tools to use and your team will be more coherent and successful in its problem solving and decision making. While the tools are here for driving forward meaningful change, there is also attention to how the work continues after the process improvements are selected. As McGoff states (p. 86) "Unless a powerfully rational, heartfelt and financially compelling case for change is made, they'll go back to what they know and continue to complain about how things should be different."
This book belongs in the tool box of any active change agent.
